Creative Technologies Centre

One of the key objectives of Walk a While is to equip Indigenous youth in remote communities with the necessary tools and skills to improve their opportunities for future employment. We walk alongside Indigenous people, using the creative arts as common ground.

We have now secured a lease for a permanent building in the Ikuntji community for our first Creative Arts & Technologies Centre.  This centre can house instructors & equipment, and provides a base for training in a variety of creative arts, including photography, cinematography, music, website development, design, as well as training for roles in tourism and hospitality.

This is the building where our Creative Arts and Technologies Centre is housed.

One of the key objectives of Walk a While is to equip indigenous youth in remote communities with the necessary tools and skills to improve their opportunities for future employment. The concept is to walk alongside indigenous people, using the creative arts as common ground. Right now today we are doing this through regular visits to a community at Haasts Bluff about 250km west of Alice Springs.

We have now secured a lease for a permanent building pictured below in the community for our first Creative Arts & Technologies Centre.  This centre can house instructors and equipment and provide a base for training in a variety of creative arts, including photography, cinematography, music, website development and design.

The Creative Technologies Centre equips young people for the digital economy and integrates with the Indigenous people’s vision for the Cross as an expression of their faith, culture and creativity that will draw visitors and create lasting economic change. Our program directors manage the Centre and facilitate training programs to educate and develop Indigenous people for new employment opportunities within the region.  These employment opportunities will include tour guides, drivers, customer service officer, administration, event management, music and film.

Location

The Ikuntji community at Haasts Bluff is nestled within the spectacular West MacDonnell Ranges, approximately 230 km south-west of Alice Springs. The community has a great Aboriginal Arts Centre and a community shop that will gladly refuel both yourself and your vehicle.

There are two access routes to Ikuntji – either via the Tanami Highway, or on the sealed road directly west of Alice Springs on Namatjira Drive to Glen Helen, then another 110 km of unsealed road continuing west to Ikuntji. This road can be impassable in heavy rain but has an amazing approach directly to Memory Mountain where the Cross is being built.
