March 2023 - Launch of the Cross on Memory Mountain
The local Indigenous people of the western desert region of NT were proud to officially launch the Cross on Memory Mountain during their 2023 Easter celebrations. They are excited that their long-held vision has finally come to fruition and were delighted to see the lights on the Cross turned on for the first time.
Families came from communities near and far to join the celebrations, with a weekend of Sing Along, cultural activities and sports competitions.
Many non-Indigenous visitors were welcomed to Easter celebrations. Tourist facilities are still virtually non-existent, so people had to be largely self-sufficient. There were a few toilets, and space to camp, but visitors had bring their own food, water and all camping gear.
Currently the only way visitors can climb to the summit of Memory Mountain is with an approved local Indigenous guide. A guided climb was organised for Easter Sunday morning, and over 100 people were privileged to watch the sun rise over the beautiful surrounding countryside.
